The state has sufficient rainfall only in the highest elevations to support other types of vegetation. To eight indigenous peoples the state is home including the Yaqui, the Mayo, and the Seri. Since the colonial period, economically the state has been important for its agriculture, mining, and livestock (especially beef). Since the Mexican American War, it status are as a border state. More than a quarter of its territory the state has lost after, via Gadsden Purchase. Industry, tourism and large agribusiness have dominated the economy from the 20th century to the present. From other parts of Mexico the state has attracted many migrants.
