Winchester History
Charlestown citizens were first settlers in Winchester. They are settled land in the northern ranges of their town in the 1630's in districts originally selected Waterfield and Rockfield. Further Charlestown lands currently part of present day Winchester were occupied to Medford in 1753 and to West Cambridge, now it is called Arlington and just some years before Winchester's own combination. During 1892 revolution Medford-Woburn road worked as an important conference place for soldiers as well as citizens. The Middlesex Canal is opened in 1803, and the Boston and Lowell Railroad which displaced it in 1853, worked to change the character of the village. The small mills on the Aberjona and isolated farms currently had fast and cheap contact to the Boston market and beyond, and these ties to the city grew stronger over time. South Woburn Congregational Church provided the first house of respect inside the village borders in 1840. Winchester was ready to found its independence from Woburn in 1850. Obviously sufficient, the public offices of the new town were located near the Church and railroad in the area that rapidly became the town's commercial, social and religious center. The new town was very nearly named "Columbus" but in its place the town fathers honored a rich businessman, Colonel William P. Winchester, who was of course, probable to return the service in a tangible fashion. Wealthy Bostonians had before used Winchester as a summer habitation. Concurrently, Boston businessmen began settling in Winchester, attracted by the railroad which made traveling possible. Street after street of residential homes built in the years following the Civil War survive complete as a witness to Winchester's final evolution to a residential suburb.

Aberjona River Channel Widening
Aberjona River Channel Widening is an ongoing project in Winchester, Ma. The widening and dredging of the Aberjona River will require increased trucking in the area because the soil and rock material that is being removed from the Aberjona River site will have to be moved. Dredging and so forth is expected to end around October 15, 2011, but full restoration to the area may continue past that date.
