Stoneham History
On February 7, 1632 while travelling Governor Winthrop and his group explored the town of Stoneham. They first found a pond which they named as Cheese Rock and it is now popularly known as Bear Hill. Primarily the town of Stoneham was occupied in 1645. The native occupiers of that region were Whigs. Initially the region of Stoneham was included in Charlestown. The northeast part of the town was principally settled by people in the year 1678. In 1725 the town of Stoneham appealed to get divided from Charlestown. The prime town meeting was managed by year 1726. In 1729 the first church was structured. The formation of church was supported by the people from Reading and Melrose. In the colonial period Stoneham was a tiny town. Later Stoneham town advanced as a huge shoe-manufacturing center in the Industrial Revolution.

stoneham public stage coach
During the 19th century, the public stagecoach line that linked North Reading to Boston began to pass run through Stoneham. This led to the reduction of farmlands located within the area as the land was developed into homes for shopkeepers, shoemakers, carpenters.
