      La Desirade Information
La Desirade is a sanctuary in the French foreign region and administers of Guadeloupe, in the Lesser Antilles. It occupies an area of 20.64 kmē and a population of 1,595, with a population density of 77 inch. Per kmē in 2006. Most citizens live in the determination of Beausejour. La Desirade is the archipelago's minimum refined and least-visited island. Even the nicest beaches are nearly isolated. Christopher Columbus on his second journey discovered the island of La Desirade in the year 1493. The island was colonized by the leper people till the year 1958. Houel and his brother on September 4, 1679 bought Guadeloupe, Marie Galante, Les Saintes and Desirade for 73,000 pounds. The amount was given in cash or sugar equivalent to the amount. A leper colony was initiated in 1725 and the people contaminated with it were required to make a trip in one direction to the island. The Catholic Sisters of Charity administered the leper colony. The charity was stopped in mid 1950s. The ruins can even now be seen here. They are a chapel and a cemetery located on the east of Baie Mahault. French after an internal strife over a century empowered the island of La Desirade. French got the powers after it's withdraw allege over Canada. It was named La Desirade by the French in 1788. The natural beauty of the island of La Desirade was damaged by the Hurricanes.

La Desirade is the most undamaged island of the Caribbean. It is the smallest tourist attracted region of the Caribbean. The island is known for the splendid beaches of white sand, privileged by lengthy underwater structures. People can be found only on the south coast. The island has one single and straight road. It connects Grande-Anse, the main market town, to the different communities, Les Galets, Le Souffleur and Baie-Mahault... La Desirade. The island has a wide range of animals and flora and fauna. The tourist who visit here are mainly attracted to take pleasure of the excellent beaches and far-reaching walks, with the mild whistling wind. The peak point of the island of La Desirade is the Mountain. The island has a fine-looking nature reserve. A tower constructed in the year 1972, the Double Point Lighthouse situated to the north of the island is the main attracted spot of the island. The marine cemetery in the town of Beausejour in Grande-Anse and the remains of the popular leper colony are also well visited by the tourists. The Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, Sailing, Valley of the Riviere and the Chapel of Our Lady of Calvary are the other favorite tourist destinations.
