This studio is located in the historic seaport city of Eureka, the heart of the giant, magnificent Redwoods. These ancient trees remaining from the days of the dinosaur are the tallest trees int the world and have played a vital role in fashioning Eurekas rich heritage.

Historically, Eurekas coastal location on Humboldt Bay and an abundance of lumber provided a ripe environment for the birth of this 19th century seaport town. More than 140 years ago, miners, loggers and fisherman made there mark in this unsettled wilderness. In fact, this particular house on H Street was built in 1885, the same year the famous Carson Mansion was built by lumber magnate William Carson.

I purchased this home in 1981 and had the opportunity to meet Ms. Bessie Woodcock, the previous owner. She was 100 years old at the time and shared with me how she and her parents moved into this house in 1914. Several of the bedrooms throughout the house have small sinks that were used to accommodate Lumber Jacks as a boarding house. Stately Victorians rising along the water front as well as various locations throughout Eureka including H Street reflect the great prosperity experienced during this era.

St Joseph Hospital, which is located about 2 miles from the apartment offers comprehensive health care services for the entire North Coast. Humboldt State University campus is just eight miles north of Eureka in Arcata and College of the Redwoods is about 7 miles south of Eureka along highway 101. This entire area is a fishing, hunting and hiking paradise with the Pacific ocean, Klamath, Trinity and Eel rivers close by.

My wife and I have traveled the entire country and have yet to find a place as beautiful as the northern California coast.
