Lower East Side Residents & Culture
Home to many of New York's immigrant communities, the Lower East Side of Manhattan was historically known for its ethnic melting pot and poverty. Finally, after 150 years of resistance, the Lower East Side has succumb to Manhattan's affluence.
The Lower East Side is cleaner and safer. The neighborhood has emerged with boutiques, eateries and a vibrant nightlife. The residents here are a mix of adventurous youth and old world immigrants. Beware, like the previous upcoming Manhattan areas, the Lower East side has its seedy spots.
Lower East Side Residences & Rents
In a
midst of change, Lower East Side residences range from pre-war walk-ups
to full service luxury buildings. For New York standards, apartment prices in
this neighborhood are cheap, but rents increase for the newer apartments.
Lower East Side Transportation & Commuting
The Lower East Side is not known for its Subway
convenience or central location. Subway travel to Queens and Brooklyn from
here is convenient, but subway travel within Manhattan is not great. Lower
East Side residents rely more on Bus transport.
